The London Reggae & Food Festival will touch down in the city this August with a special Jamaican Independence celebration. Credit: London Reggae & Food Festival This August, on Thursday, August 6, Jamaica’s annual Independence Day will mark 64 years of independence from UK colonial rule. As one of the country’s biggest public holidays, the country will be filled with celebration. And some of that celebration is coming over to London, too, in the form of the London Reggae & Food Festival. Taking over Riverside East on August 8, the one-day-only event will bring together “legendary sound systems, celebrated DJs, live performers and some of the capital’s best Caribbean street food traders.” It’s a chance for traders, performers, and visitors to celebrate the country’s rich musical and culinary heritage as they mark the nation’s Independence. Filling up the festival venue, with a rooftop terrace that offers views across Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the event is set to be “one of London’s ultimate summer celebrations of Caribbean culture.” And tickets start at just £5! And a highlight of the event will be Saxon Sound, an iconic reggae sound system that formed in South London in the 1970s. Since forming, the hugely influential sound system has helped launch the careers of the likes of Tippa Irie, Smiley Culture, and Maxi Priest. BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Seani B will be joining them on the decks, bringing his knowledge as “one of the UK’s most respected ambassadors for reggae, dancehall and Caribbean music.” Further DJS and live acts include DJ Nate & English Fire, Izzy Bossy, Shayna Marie, Vybz-SR, and Tugzy Onpoint. The London Reggae & Food Festival will bring together some of the city’s best Caribbean street food traders. They’ll be serving up authentic dishes that encompass everything from jerk chicken and curry goat to plantain, patties, and rum punch.
